The Former Croda Works

The site was an 11ha former tar chemicals works with gross soil and groundwater contamination. Sirius developed and implemented an innovative, cost-effective remediation strategy, while working closely with the client and regulators to obtain approvals for residential development. The remediation techniques included both a sophisticated capping system and Sirius proprietary solidification-stabilisation using the forerunner to our STAR system.

Project Description

Sirius are currently undertaking the land remediation to the Former Croda Works at Kilnhurst, South Yorkshire. The project is being delivered as a Design & Build package where Sirius have provided an integrated package of works i.e. investigation, characterisation, environmental risk assessment and remediation design and are now moving to the implementation of remediation, infrastructure & verification.

The 11.5 hectare site has a varied historical legacy including being home to a bitumen processing plant, a tar distillery and an ironworks and forge. The remediated site will be developed to provide 381 new homes and community facilities.

Innovation

Stabilisation and Solidification (S&S)
S&S has been utilised extensively by Sirius, using its own specialist equipment, to treat contaminated soils for reuse under the engineered cap minimising the need for disposal of material to landfill, providing a sustainable remediation solution for the project.

Engineered Protection
A geotextile composite layer (GCL) has been incorporated into the design with the specific and innovative purpose of reducing potential gas flow from the underlying soils to the development above. Rigorous and cutting-edge testing has proven the GCL’s efficiency and provides additional support to the use of a barrier method i.e.an engineered cap, along with our onsite soils remediation process.

CL:AiRE Waste Protocol
Working in cooperation with other developments and the regulatory bodies has allowed the site to import materials under the CL:AiRE protocol which would otherwise be destined for landfill. The site requirement for over 150,000m3 has enabled a significant reduction in waste and carbon emissions from haulage within the wider community.

Risk Transfer
Working with all parties involved in the land transaction and subsequent re-development, Sirius assisted the design and procurement of an insurance backed solution, which provided additional environmental liability protection for all parties involved with the project.
