Sirius Environmental provide engineering design services for Haulbowline Island

Date: September/24/2018

Sirius Environmental have delivered engineering design services in support of Cork County Councils €8 million contract with PJ Hegarty & Sons for the remediation of the 22acre former steelworks site on Haulbowline Island.

The design and build project involved the remediation & capping of the former  East Tip site including metal recovery, perimeter engineered structures, slag processing, site re-profiling, capping and landscaping.  The creation of new public green space will include playing pitches, walking/jogging circuits, picnic areas, viewing points and a car park.

Sirius Environmental provided containment engineering design for the perimeter cut-off wall, rock armour protection, capping works and restoration design which included detailed drainage design for the proposed hurling pitches to be constructed on the site.

The project was particularly complex due to the tidal influence on groundwater which affected the design of the perimeter cut off barrier and its installation below the high water mark, thereby restricting some construction works to periods of low tide.
