★★ Sirius Environmental Secures Landmark Deposit for Recovery Permit for Holcim UK ★★

Sirius Environmental, working in close partnership with the Land & Natural Resources and Operational teams at Holcim UK, have secured a landmark Deposit for Recovery and Inert Waste Processing Permit for Holcim’s Croft Quarry facility near Narborough in the East Midlands.

As quarrying operations have now been discontinued, the site has been re-purposed as a secondary materials handling and processing centre, very much in the ethos of Holcim’s approach to reducing the carbon footprint of their overall operations and looking to drive materials up the waste hierarchy.

The proposed activities will include a centre of excellence for the recycling and recovery of inert waste materials and the production of secondary soils and aggregates at a bespoke hub, situated near the quarry entrance.

In addition to the bespoke recycling operations, Sirius Environmental have secured an Environmental Permit for a Deposit for Recovery operation which is the largest of its kind in the UK, if not Europe. This is for the deposit of 18 million Cubic Metres or 27 million Tonnes of Qualifying Materials for the restoration of the quarry void in accordance with Holcim’s planning consent commitments.

Sirius negotiated the widest waste range possible with the Environment Agency, to ensure Holcim had the maximum market flexibility available for the operation. As the infilling operations are also classed as a Recovery Operation, they will remain totally exempt from the forthcoming proposed changes to a single rate of landfill tax for the restoration of quarries, which will affect the whole of sector within the UK.

The majority of materials will be delivered by rail utilising the existing infrastructure, resulting in a substantial reduction in road miles to achieve the stated aim.

Sirius Environmental’ s work has helped Holcim continue with their mission of becoming the UK’s leader of innovative and sustainable building solutions.
