Demolition works by Sirius Group on a site in Hartlepool uncovered more than expected when they revealed three election posters dating back to local elections in 1936. The posters, on a wall inside a garage on  Moore Street, called for local residents to vote for three candidates - Richard Elliot, Kenneth D'Alby and Lloyd George Turner in the local elections held on 2 November 1936. On one of the posters, Kenneth D’Alby urged residents to vote for him with the words: ‘For Loyalty, For Principle, For Labour.’

The site, bought from Hartlepool Borough Council by Taylor Wimpey is earmarked for 175 new detached and semi detached homes along with a number of bungalows and flats. The demolition is now complete and building works are due to start this month.

Phillip Collings of Sirius Group says: “It was quite a surprise. We do uncover historic artefacts occasionally but this is certainly one of the more striking finds. It’s interesting to see that candidates were fighting their corners and vying for votes back then just in the same way as they do today.”
