In the UK, mineral extraction through the years has resulted in a legacy of abandoned shallow mine workings dating back to Roman times. Coal, ironstone, sand and sandstone, limestone and metaliferrous minerals have all been mined at depths that can, and do, interact with and destabilise the surface. These redundant mine workings can result in serious problems. Careful consideration needs to be given to them right from the start because the investigation, and any treatment, can be fundamental to the economic success of your development.

SDS have extensive experience of treating such workings and ensuring the stability of sites. We can also help with the calculation of associated abnormal costs at the feasibility stage of the development, a service we gladly provide at no cost.
